Best Outdoor Family Photo Locations Near Bowie

If you’ve been searching for the best outdoor family photo locations in Bowie, Maryland; than do I have the list for you!

As a Bowie-based family and maternity photographer, I’ve spent years exploring parks, trails, and open fields across Prince George’s County, Howard County, and the greater DMV area. And session after session, the same locations keep delivering beautiful photos for my clients. The kind of sessions with golden light and natural backdrops that make families light up when they see their gallery.

Here are six of my favorite spots for outdoor family and maternity sessions, and what makes each one work.

Note: Some locations on this list require a permit for professional photography . There are additional fees for my clients; I handle all of that in advance while planning your session.

1. Bacon Ridge Natural Area — Bowie, MD

*Bacon Ridge is one of my most-used Bowie-adjacent locations. It’s got beautiful milkweed flowers in summer and stunning leaves in fall. The parking lot sits right next to my main photographing areas, which makes it one of the easiest sessions for families with young children to navigate. No long hike before we even start.
Best for: Families with little ones, maternity sessions with a natural, woodsy feel, golden hour sessions year-round.

Pro tip: Golden hour light is best here. This is a great location to wear something bold. Rich colors pop beautifully against the greens in summer and the warm foliage in fall. Parking is free and right at the trailhead.

*Bacon Ridge is currently closed for construction in 2026 and is not available for sessions at this time. Check back though; it’s worth it when it reopens.

2. Kinder Farm Park (Wildflower Trail), Millersville, MD

Wildflower Trail is another easily accessible location that’s simple and consistent for photos. There are field grasses, open sky, and room for kids to actually run around. It’s uncluttered, which means nothing competing with your family in the frame.

Best for: Spring and early summer sessions, maternity sessions, families who want a clean open-field look.

Pro tip: This location can get busy in the fall. I recommend spring or summer for a more relaxed session. Bold colors and light neutrals look great against the field grasses.

3. Beverly Triton Nature Park — Edgewater, MD

Beverly Triton is one of my favorite waterfront locations in the area. The backdrop of Chesapeake Bay is lovely and gives sessions a completely different feel from a typical field or wooded park.

Best for: Families who want a waterfront feel, maternity sessions with a relaxed, beachy vibe.

Pro tip: There’s a short walk from the parking lot to the beach (totally manageable for families with little ones). This location can get busy in summer, so I recommend spring or fall for a more relaxed session. Colors that contrast with the water and sand (like rust, and shades of green) photograph beautifully here.

4. Howard County Conservancy — Woodstock, MD

Howard County Conservancy is one of the most accessible locations I shoot at; parking is right there and we’re photographing within minutes. The grounds offer a mix of open field and a beautiful old wooden barn that adds something really unique to the backdrop. Fall is especially stunning here with rich reds and oranges throughout.

Best for: Families of all sizes, maternity sessions, fall sessions.

Pro tip: Fall is peak season here; the color is incredible and the barn backdrop really shines. Bold, warm tones look amazing against the autumn palette.

5. Patapsco Valley State Park — Avalon Area, Elkridge, MD

Patapsco Valley State Park has a secluded feel that’s hard to find this close to the city. The creek and a stone tunnel make for really unique backdrops – it’s one of the most visually interesting locations on this list.

Best for: Families who want something different, maternity sessions with a more dramatic or editorial feel.

Pro tip: This location gets busy in the summer; spring and fall are ideal for a quieter session. Bold colors and prints contrast beautifully against the lush greens and stone textures here. There is a parking fee to enter the park.

6. Seneca Creek State Park — Gaithersburg, MD

Seneca Creek can be a quieter, more tucked-away location. I photograph adjacent to the peony garden, which is stunning in May when the wild peonies are in bloom – but the field is beautiful and peaceful year-round.

Best for: Families who want something quiet and unhurried, maternity sessions with a soft and natural feel, May sessions for peak peony season.

Pro tip: May is the sweet spot here for the peonies, but don’t count it out the rest of the season; the field works throughout the summer and fall. Colors like burgundy, teal, or creams contrast well against the soft greens of the field. Note that this location requires a permit for professional photography, which I handle in advance while planning your session.

How to Pick the Right Location for Your Session

Not sure which spot is right for your family? Here’s how I think about it:

You have little ones who need room to move: Kinder Farm’s Wildflower Trail and Seneca Creek both give kids space to explore, which means more natural and relaxed images.

You want a waterfront or beachy vibe: Beverly Triton delivers that without the long drive. Patapsco has beautiful creek access if you want water with a more dramatic, secluded feel.

You’re booking a maternity session: any of these locations can work beautifully, but I tend to gravitate toward wide open fields and big skies for bump sessions. Kinder Farm’s wildflower trail and Howard County Conservancy are personal favorites.

You want dramatic light and texture: Bacon Ridge is hard to beat when it reopens, especially with the seasonal wildflowers and foliage.

You’re not sure? That’s what I’m here for! Once we connect, we’ll talk through your family, your kids’ ages, the vibe you’re going for, and the time of year. Picking the right location is part of the process.
